Handling the impact of COVID-19

The unfolding global crisis caused by the rapid spread of the Corona virus means we are all facing many new and entirely unprecedented scenarios: no crisis and emergency scenario plan will have been able to foresee all the astonishing fallouts from a truly global phenomenon, so pervasive and limiting that we are all having to re-think most aspects of our daily lives.

Clear, reliable and consistent communication is crucial; from decision makers, authorities and employers everywhere. Employees in large organisations need to know the relevant facts; forthcoming changes, immediate impact on their roles, work patterns, locations etc.

ConnectMinds hosted a network-wide online community conference on Thursday 12. March. Members exchanged ideas and early experiences, discussed challenges and helped each other out. We will do the same in the group and look at the input that has been generated by the network thus far.

Could the Corona Crisis be a turning point for the digital transformation efforts and for your team in particular?

The crisis we are experiencing right now requires immediate action. Not in two hours or in two days. Is your organisation able to actually reach out to all employees at a moment’s notice; as in right now if they need to? Most are not.

Unfortunately, many companies have chosen to save here. Licensing costs, lack of understanding of the complexity of running and effective communication set up in a large, fragmented organisation, lack of vision or of the understanding of the potential of an effective set up - and often it’s all of the above…

The COVID-19 crisis has clearly shown that communication to, with and between employees is vitally important and thus justify the investment in good internal communication. The same goes for the ability to communicate and provide clarity and re-assurance to customers, partners, suppliers and other external stakeholders. Consequently, it is beyond any shadow of doubt that this is a crucial moment for those handling communications and the channels distributing it because it highlights whether the organisation is indeed able to communicate effectively in a crisis that is unprecedented both in scale and in terms of the number of unknowns. Is the organisation able reach everyone, to ensure understanding of required action, compliance etc in order to reduce the risk of infection, comply with changing legislation etc.? Or are you having to spend valuable time retrieving private phone numbers or emails from different databases, because you have not invested in an effective and robust setup that has been maintained and is well structured, easy to use etc.?

These are merely the first few of many now inescapable questions relating to the actual robustness and preparedness of the digital and comms setups of your respective organisations. This is most certainly a pivotal moment and will be a turning point. It will be crystal clear after this that a well-maintained digital / comms setup (including internal / employee facing comms) can no longer be considered a "nice-to-have". We discuss whether we can do anything to “document” this or prepare the post-crisis retrospective while furiously dealing with the unfolding events. -All in order to ensure that the ghastly things we go through right now will lead to positive change for our area and have a lasting legacy.

Other Challenges & Opportunities

We are still open to discuss non-Corona related topics. Bring ANY topic or question you would like to discuss in the group; something you would like expert feedback (opinions...) on or something that is currently proving challenging.

Be ready to talk through a little context and the sort of feedback you are looking for. Try to be as specific as possible. Ideally, share a brief description of it on Workplace

Growing the group and network stronger and more valuable

Do you know anyone who would benefit from the group and wider ConnectMinds network? Send them some background on the group with a line or two about why you are a member.

They can easily register their interest on the site - and I will then follow up and have a chat with them. Many thanks in advance!
